Walrus TV Artist Feature: Estevan Oriol

This little clip really inspires me. I guess it is my strong connection with Latino culture, as I am half Mexican, but it goes deeper than that. Hommie is just trying to make it in this world by taking photos of real LA culture.

Via the beast

Establishing himself as one of Los Angeles’ most well-known photographers among other talents, Estevan Oriol serves up an intimate look into his craft of photography. From his background to his approach to working the camera, his tireless efforts to fine tune and hone his skills behind the camera have made him the mastermind behind so many memorable works of photographic art. Take the time and check out the feature which is among the best out of Walrus TV thus far.

Roger Skateboards

Have you heard about Roger Skateboards?
LoL. Well famous skateboard artist Michael Sieben and Stacy Lowery just started it. They are going for a grass roots approach and I love it. This brand is defiantly on the move. Funny Ass Shit.

Mishka 2009 Spring/ Summer Look Book

Now that I am hooked on Mishka, I saw this today on the Hypebeast and thought it was totally blog worthy. For a couple reasons-

Not just for the clothes, style, lifestyle, but for the photo shoot Marley Kate did.
This is what I want to do!!!

The pics are fresh... check them out
Anyone want to style this one out?

Check the CAB deck! Holler

Besides that, the question is- is Mishka a poser? They act like they are down with skate, but are they really?? I think not, just a gimmick. Skates sell. Kinda wack. But I guess its cool. What do you think about Mishka posing on skate?

Matthew Bone Southern Preview

Southern California artists Matthew Bone and Brian Viveros' show "Southern" opened May 9th at Last Rites Gallery in New York.

Matthew's work is provocative and challenging especially when he paints in generous scale. By combining the mass appeal of sex and horror, he gives the insincere pop culture hype machine a good 360 snap of the neck by throwing it right back as a "re-envisioned modern mythology."

Check It Out

"Southern Oil" - collaboration Brian Viveros and Matthew Bone, mixed media on maple, 20 x 30

Cat Vs Dog People

Let me first start off by saying that I love and respect all animals considered to be Pets. When someone tells me they hate pets, I think to myself... "I can't be friends with you!" I have encountered over the years, and it is starting to bug me more and more, that there is a distinct bias against people with Kitties.

For example, I say to my roomie... "lets get a kitty." He says "Gross!" He says back to me "lets get a dog" I say "I am down with that".

Not during one point in the conversation did I bad mouth a dog.

My friend James does it to me all the time. He glorifies his dog Rommal (he is pretty fucking sexy best), bashes my kitty Pee Wee. WTF. It is still my damn pet, its called respect!

Although, I do have a personal preference. Everyone does. That is ok. I am not against dogs, I just don't have the time or space right now.

Another thing with Kitties, sometimes you get an asshole cat that just likes to go under your bed and run away from you, and then kitty just wines because he wants food. I hate those kind of kitties, they bug me. HOWEVER! Once you get a good kitty that just likes to snuggle with you and love, and has total personality, you have hit the jack pot! Oh yeah, BTW, all my kitties are indoor-outdoor! So yeah, all I am trying to say is fuck people who hate on cats. I understand that there are lame cats out there, more often than most, but the good ones are way better than dogs! For me at least! Easy, clean, smart, and soft! Please don't tell me you hate cats because that shit is wack and I would be happy to go on a walk with you and you dog! Booh-yah.

Half Cab by Vans

Well I just saw this on TB's tweet.

Kind of bummed the used the same color wave as the Todd Bratrud Volcom line.
They did jock the scales a lil bit. But after some more research, I discovered this:

The scales have been on there since the first OG Cab Vans came out in the early 90's. They were actually biting the Jordan III by NIke (Although they probably wouldn't admit it), but with dragon-like scales ... since Cab has always been identified by his Powell Peralta Dragon graphics since he's part Japanese.

The Jordan III was the next most popular shoe after the original Jordan which they all wore in Animal Chin. Another thing is that the Jordan III was the first popular Mid-Top basketball shoe and at that same time, we were cutting Cab Vans down to mid-tops or even low tops.

Then I read this link and confirmed it was a bite!
It reads: "Here we see a Vans Half Cab scheduled late this year or early next where you can definitely tell Todds influence" NO SHIT!

DNA Ghetto Fab Photo Shoot

Just got what I think is the last of the pics from my photo shoot with my personal stylists Dirty Cash, Jenna Stevenson, my lil model cousin Melissa Vandaele & the DNA Photo Crew outta SB.

Stoked on the ideas and how it came out. Our main goal was to promote street wear as a life style and a personal brand, with a hipster pop edge and emphasis on skate and Latino culture.

Working in the skateboarding industry does rub off on me quite a bit, and when I was in Jr. High I always gravitated to the skate, over surf & snow, always, because Shorty's was the shit at that time and I had to have my one pocket OG back pack and "horty" hoody. Yal know what I am talking about. Not just because I grew up with Shortys in Santa Barbara, but because skateboarding was just a little bit dirtier & steezier than surfing. I could actually get on a skate and ollie with my white Kostons on. My love for skate culture and fashion has been with me a long time. On anther note, I have also been noticing high fashion brands like LV jockin' the skate scene too, because they know how big the market is and what it represents. And then you have Pharell. LOL. Anyways. Thus you have skateboards and hot chics.

I wanted something bubbly and poppy but hard.

Mike and I also really wanted to push the Latino culture into the shoot as well. When you are an SB loc, you are down with the 'siders and cholos. That is how is works. You go to parties and there are Mexicans kicking it with the surfers, punks, everyone is in the mix. I see kids pushing the styles at SB High, that we tried to high light. Flannels. Mad Doggers or "Locs". Catholicism. High Socks. Chucks. Lip Liner. Mexican Candy. This idea does need to be expanded...And all of the above reasons are why I like Mike Giant. He throws down with Latino culture and its real.

Mike Rojas brought the dirtier edge to it, a little grunge and sex in the mix. Jenna contributed her knowledge of high fashion and organization of detail, and let me tell you, they both have lots of good ideas and most importantly an EYE FOR FASHION & TRENDS. Derren does have a special talent for taking good pictures and Ana knows how to pimp them out! But most importantly they all support me and I support them and it is refreshing working with people who are ampted on the same stuff and are motivated to get shit done.

We attempted to do a second shoot to contrast with more high fashion items, but from the looks of the pics, it seems like the lighting was just not right so that shoot will definitely need to be done again!

I am hoping to do another shoot soon, perhaps around the same theme as well. If you have a good camera, give me a holler!

Anyways, just me and my little cuz kickin' it at the market eating candy, with nothing to do but cause MISHIEF.

Fafi X Adidas continues...

Fafi is my favorite. I used to jock on Miss Van, because I was in Barcelona for so long and that is her zone... but then I discovered Fafi, and realized I like her little characters more. They are cuter. Their eyes are are a bit slanted with winged eye lashes, Miss Van's are darkened out. I also really like how her characters are a little ghetto and pornographic at times.

Check out the new sneaks for Adidas on Hypebeast

Continuing her collaborative efforts with the adidas Originals campaign, Parisian artist Fafi will be releasing her third collection this October. The lineup looks to feature five models, with a preview of the first seen here. Utilizing adidas Honey Mid’s, the sneakers take obvious inspiration from Fafi’s world travels and upcoming comic book, which should prove to be another worthy endeavor for the artist.

Here is a little pic of her new comic book! I want it! BAD

Freedom Artists Contest in Malibu

Two weekends ago I went to a Freedom Artists Contest at West Zuma Beach in Malibu. It was hella windy but the waves were trashing enough to make a splash and it turned out to be a pretty good contest for its size.

From Surfline:

Surfers such as Danny Fuller, Josh Curran, Kalani Robb, Colin Giles, Noah Ericsson, Danny Estes, Quinn McCrystal, and Kilian Garland came to compete and show their support for this grassroots LA-homegrown surf series.
