Carving The Moutains

More so recently, longboard skateboarding has become really popular as a mode of transportation, lifestyle, and best of all- fun. I was first introduced to skateboarding in Santa Barbara, but rediscovered it again in Barcelona Spain when I studied abroad in 2006 my Junior year of college at the Universiat de Pompeu Fabra. I was shown this short clip produced in Spain and really took a liking to it. The music at first reminds me of the Spanish Academy award winning Pan's Labyrinth. The creativity in Spain is so refreshing.

Check out The Longboard Crew on facebook. They  have over 30,000 fans!
Hope you enjoy the video.

BuBululu Malibu

Happy Summer! yay!
About a year ago, I discovered a beautiful swimwear brand called Bubululu Malibu. I was at First Point during a surf contest and my friend Cayley was wearing the cutest suit! I was quick to ask  her the brand and she delightfully introduced me to her friend Shannon, who owns and operates Bubululu with her mom in Malibu.

Shannon's suits and photos are simply gorgeous and I  love the direction she has taken on with eco-friendly materials. Her Bali-made organic cotton suits scream comfort! I can't wait to get my  hands on one.

Check out her site here and a list of retailers.

Have you been to the MOCA yet?

Get your ass down there.
OUTSIDE IN movie trailer from Levi's Film Workshop on Vimeo.

OUTSIDE IN is a celebratory and historical look at street art through the lens of the Museum of Contemporary Art's groundbreaking exhibition Art in the Streets. The film features renowned artists Shepard Fairey, Lee Quiñones, Swoon, Futura, Mister Cartoon, Revok, Martha Cooper, Invader to name a few. Director Alex Stapleton (Corman's World: Exploits of a Hollywood Rebel) documents the artist's creative process, their pitfalls with the law, the poetic impermanence of their craft and the artists' evolution from the back seat of a cop car to the walls of a well-respected institution.

Memorial Day Weekend

May 25, 2011 - Source: IMG Action Sports

In the 80’s and 90’s, the Bud Surf Tour was instrumental in the cultivation of many surfer’s careers – giving the athletes a platform and financial opportunity to chase their goals. Now, the Bud Light Lime Surf Series (BLLSS) will pay tribute to some of the Bud Tour icons with the “All Stars of the Bud Tour” heat taking place on the final day of the (BLLSS) projected for Sunday, May 29th at Church in San Onofre State Beach.

Four original Bud Tour athletes - Chris Brown, Jim Hogan, Pat O’Connell, and Vince De La Pena - will once again meet in the water. “The Bud Tour was a great experience for me and I'm excited to see Bud Light Lime get involved with this next generation of aerobatic surfers. I can’t wait to get out in the water with Pat, Chris and Vinnie” said Jim Hogan.

In addition, The Bud Light Lime Surf Series has added new names to the field for the San Clemente Shootout. The contest has received commitments from the following surfers:

Brian Toth, CJ Kahuna, Gavin Beschen, Josh Hoyer, Kamalei Alexander, Kilian Garland, Mitch Coleborn, Nate Tyler, Nick Rozsa, Pete Mussio, Shane Beschen, Torrey Meister

Caligiuri X Johnson :: '92 Til Infinity

A couple of weeks ago I received a very special gift from my dear friend, the magical VCJ. I was sitting at my desk at work when Court walked into the office for the usual Thursday Design Review and handed me a present. My gift was enclosed in the yellow manila envelope pictured below with over forty drawings he and I had done from the years of 1992- 1994. They are all very well presereved to say the least and I am so happy to share them with you today.

The story goes:
When I was 6 years old, my family and I moved out of our house on Bath St in down town Santa Barbara and relocated to my grandmother's house on Curly Ave and Figuroua St. There, I met the neighbor, known as VCJ, or to me and my family, just simply, Court. Court worked at Powell-Peralta during that time and I set out in my bratty ways to spend as much time as I could at Court's house doing art. It was there I recieved my first mentorship in terms of fine art and drawing and I moved on to get a scholorship from the Ridley Tree (sponsored by the SB Museum of Art) in the 3rd grade at Roosevelt Elementary School. Here are some of my best sessions with Court.

It is funny to think that I am still into these very same things. I love horses. Take a moment to look at my flowers, cloud, and horsey and then compare it to Court's. Pretty good !

I love this one with the date and my shadow the flowers are making.

I guess I knew what the good life was even back then!

My first drawing of a dolphin.

I would also like to add that Court was drawing left handed. Just for fun!

Not too shabby for a 7 year old huh?

This article/ interview just went online and it is the first interiew with Court in a long time... I really enjoyed reading this, I hope you will too.
From LA TACO

Vernon Courtland Johnson, or VCJ, is one of today’s most influential artists working in a commercial medium. His iconic designs for Powell Peralta have inspired thousands of other artists worldwide, and he routinely gets namechecked by street-art superstars like D*Face and Shepard Fairey. VCJ didn’t invent the idea of skateboard art, but he both defined it and set a standard that others have yet to match. VCJ is unique in today’s art scene, as his work is admired by an incredibly wide range of fans and other artists. Fine artists delight in his skill in freehand drawing, especially skulls. Street artists love the way he makes images iconic, and designs into globally recognizable characters. Commercial artists marvel at the precision and deceptive amount of detail he is able to work into every design. And those of us who are fans adore the power, humor, beauty, and intensity of his art– millions of us saved up our allowances to be able to buy a Powell Peralta deck with a VCJ design. TACO recently got the rare chance to ask Vernon a few questions… stay tuned after the interview for a mini gallery of high-res VC Johnson Powell-Peralta decks.

TACO: How did you get your start as an artist? When did you hook up with Powell Peralta?
VCJ: Born as a human with large brain and opposing digits, I learned to amuse myself with material found along the road on Campus Earth. Mud, rocks, sticks, water, paint, paper, metals, fire. I had an aptitude for art and other fixations from an early age. They let me play. George Powell married an older sister of mine and took interest in me as a late teenager looking for direction. When I was thirty, he noticed that I was floating along as a hippy who could work, so he hired me to help outfit a factory for mass production of skateboards. I was jazzed to have many creative projects every day and to master a production line towards market success.

TACO: Do you have a favorite of all the characters you’ve created? A favorite deck?
VCJ: No favorites stand out for me in my work. My skate poster series truly satisfied my appetite for mastery of composition, components and chiaroscuro.

TACO: You’re an icon in many circles, but it seems that many street artists mention you as one of their primary influences. What do you think of street art and the way people re-use your iconic characters in their works?
VCJ: I am glad to be an inspiration to others in my time. I’ve been inspired by many artists and I’m sorry that I haven’t told them so. Some of them, like Escher, Eichenberg, and Rick Griffin, have passed on and I could have written to them, but I didn’t. I hope to do better with my praise of the living examples in the days to come. Street art looks to make the world a better place and to notify others of ones existence. I have such an interest myself and have placed sculptures in the ocean for the dolphins and divers to enjoy.

TACO: During the time when you were away from designing skateboard images, did you mainly focus on your sculpture? What can you tell us about your approach to sculpture and what you’re working on?
I took 20 years off in order to recover my health, to know myself and to develop an effective inner dialectic. The results have been very effective and assure me of long life. I spent time at the beach, in the ocean, and flew to Florida often , to swim with dolphins.
I developed my skill with applied kinesiology and mastered the ability to read the body’s systems, which I have used now for 20 years. I am used by many for my ability to scan systems for origins of disturbance and for restorative measures. My wife also reads systems with muscle testing, which facilitates her professional work with clients. We have published a workbook for those who take our course in Instantaneous Intelligence & The Mojo Philter. After setting this major piece of true-life-work in print and sealing it into a time capsule, I began to engage ferro-cement as a convenient sculptural medium. Layers of expanded metal are cut, manipulated into layered forms that will hold cement that gets pressed into the layers, finished and cured, then to be painted. Cheap, fast, durable, ferro-cement. I’m working on a Phoenix that rises up from a stand to 8′, to honor a community here that burned in the last big fire.

TACO: One of your decks is now in the Smithsonian, have you been to visit it? Where do you see your place in history?
VCJ: So, my work is represented in the Smithsonian now… I guess I can die happy. I heard that a wine label got into the Library of Congress a few years back. I’m warned about pride but feel the tingle. After all is said and done and we’re laid to rest, it’s funny what we get remembered for. You should read my “Lymerics for the Mystic Minded”, not out yet, but some of my best work in black and white.

TACO: What’s your favorite taco?
My favorite taco place is “Pinchy Tacos” in Watts. They don’t sell to the public, only to pinchy dudes like me who like the best. Don’t tell Hector and Lupe that I told you anything more specific, ‘cuz they’d 86 me.

Do you have a lucky number?
I’ve answered 7 questions … One for each chakra. I trust I’ve hit all bases. One last question and response. My favorite number. After a brief pause to consider, I shall offer “7″ and/or “6″….. “7-6″ This represents my enthusiasm for soul. To all Souls now extant on the physical plane I say, ” I wish for you all, the highest fulfillment.

Manifest Essence, V.C. Johnson

Real Recongnizes Real

Summer 2011 Rebel8 line just dropped. Frothing over this "Skate Core" tee!!!!!
You gotta go to the site to get the zoomed in view. The graff in the pool is sweet! I honestly love the fresh new look R8 is taking with incorporating color into Giant's art. The design and layout of this tee is awesome.

Straight from the Owner of Rebel 8, Joshy D:

"Summer ’11 is the first season since mid-2008 that I had a big hand in designing. Back in the day, circa ’04, before Giant lived in SF, he’d send me poster tubes filled with art. With a Pantone book in one hand and the original art in the other, I’d pick and choose ink colors, graphic sizes and placements. I’d take the over-sized posters to a spot in SoMa [San Francisco] to have them shot directly to film. From there I’d hit the screenprinter and choose body styles and colorways. And that was how REBEL8 would get made. Back then it was literally just Mike Giant and Joshy D.

In fact, Giant wouldn’t even see what I did with his art until we’d link up in Vegas in our shitty motel room where I’d present him the line. Thankfully he was always stoked on what I did and his trust in me became stronger with each season. I made a promise to Mike back then that I would always keep his name in the highest regard and always make sure his art was properly showcased and respected. Over the years we’ve all seen shady motherfuckers fuck a lot of talented artists, and I would never do that to my number one homeboy.

So getting back to Summer 2011. It’s available right now in its entirety here. It’s my favorite season we released in quite some time. Summer ’11 is homage to our past and our legitimate history in skateboarding. It’s simple, but well thought-out. It’s pure REBEL8, back to the basics. Back to why you fell in love with REBEL8 in the first place.

Our history makes us who we are today and our today determines whom we will be tomorrow.
REBEL8 is built around like-minded individuals and that is why you are reading these very words right now. We are a big healthy family that supports each other, fights our enemies, and holds fast.

Summer at the Santa Barbara Bowl

This weekend, I officially kicked off my Summer with a trip to the Santa Barbara Bowl to see Lauren Hill. What would summer be like with out the SB Bowl? God only knows.... I just know it is my favorite Summer past time.
Standard SB Bowl picture ! :) Cute as always!
That is us having lots of fun and trying to pretend Lauren Hill's live performance wasn't very entertaining. She started to play at 8:50 PM and with a 10:00 PM SB curfew, she was literally on stage for 50 minutes. And she sounded not that great.... sorry Lauren..... It was just too fast on your good songs! Band was too "funky". But "Oh la la la" was a good one.

This summer is kind of weak at The SB Bowl. What do you  guys think about the schedule?

Either way, SB Bowl + My Girlies + Summer = Best Time Ever

My New Sk8 Setup VS Da Old One

I never was one for traditional sports. I was the scronny chic in Jr High that no one wanted on their team. I picked up skateboarding in the 7th grade and it has always my little thing. I can ollie. My claim to fame. I have emersed myself in the skate industry for the past 2 1/2 years and this past week I set up my first vert board.

I used to want to learn how to kick flip, but now all I want to do is smoke the bowls at the park. Or hit up a good pool here and there. Or just drop in with out breaking my whole face.

Here is my new set up:
hoopla skateboards 8.25" Deck
Indepedent 149 Trucks
Chris Miller 56mm BONES WHEELS Skate Park Formula
BONES HARDCORE Bushings- One Medium, One Soft
Reds Bearings (Swiss are next!!!)
Thank you to Mimi Knoop, Cara-Beth Burnside, and the whole hoopla skateboards team for inspiring me and encouraging Woman's skateboarding

Here is my old set up:
Mini Logo 7.75" deck
sample white trucks glossy
BONES 53mm All Terrain Formula wheels
BONES HARDCORE Medium Bushings

In case you need a summary of what I changed up, here it is- This used to be my trade show cruising around the hood board... so it is skinner, the wheels are softer for going over gravel, and they are smaller. Oh, and the trucks just look pretty against the white background. I didn't want to scratch them (I am such a chic).
Yes, I had pink grip tape. I wanted it to be all girlie. Now this shit just gets dirty. Lol. Back to black!
Yeah all my favorite brands get a little spot on board. Yes, I kook it and I'm not sponsored. :P I have a freakish sticker obsession and will be stickering up my new hoopla deck once I get a wild hair up my butt!

Wish me luck! First session on my new board was Saturday and I am working on my wall rides and getting used to a bigger deck and faster, harder wheels.
Later skater.

PS. Did I tell you I was deathly afraid of the slam??????!?!?!??!?! AHAHHHH
