Back to Skooool

Surprise! I am going back to school to learn Graphic Design and Photography. God has blessed me with lots of ups and downs in the past year but I am so so so blessed to go back to school and learn! I am taking Typography (study of fonts and printing), Photoshop, Illustrator, and Photography. I thought it would be fun to share my first photo in class so you can watch my progression. The teacher gave us twenty minutes to take a selfie so I took my ass down to the bathroom and did what every girl on Instgram and FB does. That sounds so uncreative of me but I figured I would make it easy for myself to see my basic progress using the camera functions. Can't wait to keep sharing my own pictures!

The Rose Bowl at C-Street

Shifting through junk for hidden treasures is defiantly a favorite past time of mine. I really can't justify purchasing some items at full retail cost and what I love the best is the individuality and story behind the find. I have been swooning to go to the Rose Bowl Flea Market in Pasadena for years now but haven't made it yet, however, I was lucky this weekend when Rachel told me the Rose Bowl Flea Market was coming to Ventura! This sounded great to me because I didn't have to drive too far and I could test out the junkie waters. Overall the show was OK, I do think there is better stuff at the larger one, even though I have never been my gut is telling me so, but that is not to say that there wasn't some awesome finds!

Check out some of my tips below for flea market shopping and treasure hunting :) xo

Tip 1: Watch out for redone furniture. They all look amazing, the price seems great, but can you do that yourself? Probably ... with a little paint and a piece of sand paper. Lots of people purchase furniture and re-do it and sell it at a higher price. Simply ask yourself if it is worth the work. I love this table and set up.

Cute idea for a garden box...

I thought these little bottle vases were pretty cool, I can make these and so can you:) Cute on the rake huh?

Ok here is where is gets hard for me, Vintage PlayBoy magazines.... OMG

Tip 2: Research the market value of your favorite items and check on Ebay. I wasn't going to purchase these today bc of my budget but I wanted them, BAD. I could have dropped a $100 because they each were $8-15. But I didn't because I didn't do my research. RESEARCH RESEARCH RESEARCH! Some of these are worth more depending on who they feature...

Tip 3: If you are hunting for something very specific, research the top brand in that category during the time period you are looking for. Bingo. Condition matters. I feel like a fucking Pawn Star right now but whatever lol. You can't buy a random Star Wars figure and expect it to be worth anything, it has to be a Hasbro one ya dig??

Pat purchased this awesome fold up bike for $52 bucks and they guy wouln't budge off of $75. Pat pulled out his walled and showed him exactly how much he had and he told it to him anyways.

Tip 4: Hide money on your body and keep a little in your wallet so you can show the vendor that you "only have this much" Now here is where you can have a lot of fun being creative after you score at the market. Rachel and I found this French redone chair that was in good condition but obviously needs a good makeover to give it some more style. The shape is absolutely magnificent and what I call the "perfect mermaid chair" based on the shell shape back. She haggled him down to $25 when he was asking $50.

The wood feet are also very detailed and beautiful. I won't ruin the surprise when it is done but I can't wait for her to start this project for their new home. So happy for my friends!!!

Tip 5: Look for hoards of jewelry all thrown together. Usually those piles have a couple of goodies for $1, $2, & $3. I found this necklace for $3 and I am so happy!!! It is perfect for Hawaii and anything Bohemian.

Here is another chair Rachel purchased to re-do. It screams vintage retro 70's! Can't wait to see the final product.

Tip 6: Make sure to watch out for over prized Ebay hipsters who have online stores/ blogs. There is a lot of kids out there jumping at the thought of vintage coming back bla bla, I know some of my friends are doing it, but don't be fooled at the flea market. There are kids there just trying to make a buck and if you can the goods yourself, no need to pay their "retail price." The only time it is worth it is for a one of a kind item that you must have, regardless of the price. So you decide if their finding price is worth it by doing your research.

Hope those were some useful tips for you. Make sure to check out the flea market in Ventura every week, there is some good shit out there. Don't try SB, there isn't much that is good except yard sale hunting and the May Madness sale at the Music Academy.

Here are a couple books if you are interested in the subject matter, they have some great tips for beginners!:

The Line Up

Stoked to see that the Coachella line up is out. Looks like we all got fooled by The Stone Roses and The Rolling Stones rumor. LOL. I have been wanting to see Red Hot Chili Peppers my whole life... I am still debating on weather or not I am going to sell my tickets or keep them and go. I have been to this festival 3 times already and I am so down for the scene, but I also really want to go to Bali this year and I will have the opportunity to see RHCP again. Pondering this. Tickets go on sale Tuesday so I will just have to wait to see if they sell out and what the demand is lookin like...
Stoked on Blur, Jurassic 5, Bassnectar, Metric, The XX, La Roux, Decendents, Wu-Tang, Social D to name a few.

The Line Up is Coming

Coachella fans across the world are waiting. We are waiting for the line-up. Who is it going to be this year? They just released this little video and it made me get so excited! Every year, prior to the release of the line-up, fake wish lists get released and fool thousands of newbee concert goers. It is always fun to see what is on the posters because some of the time, our wishes are granted. I have been wanting to cross off my Rolling Stones concert from The Bucket List and I am hoping this year that will happen. Here's to Mick Jagger's tongue- and hopefully WUTANG

Epsom Salt

Epsom Salt. I am sure you have heard of it, know what it is or seen it at your friends house before but I thought I would post on it because it truly is magical. Epsom Salt isn't actually a salt, it is a

naturally occurring pure mineral compound of magnesium and sulfate and is

named after a bitter saline spring at Epsom in Surrey, England. I know I did a post a week or two ago about my

Energy Cleansing Bath Elixir

- but I wanted to expand and follow up with Epsom Salt if you don't want to get all fancy with herbs or you are an athlete. If you are interested in detoxifying baths, I strongly suggest you head over to your nearest CVS and pick a gallon of this stuff for $2. The price is awesome and it is so readily available at drug stores. For the ultimate detoxing bath, I suggest two cups of Epsom Salt and about 3 tablespoons of baking soda.

Studies have shown that magnesium and sulfate are both readily absorbed through the skin, making Epsom salt baths an easy and ideal way to enjoy the amazing health benefits. Magnesium plays a number of roles in the body including regulating the activity of over 325 enzymes, reducing inflammation, helping muscle and nerve function and helping to prevent artery hardening. Sulfates help improve the absorption of nutrients, flush toxins and help ease migraine headaches.

Eases stress and relaxes the body

Stress drains the body of magnesium and increases levels of adrenaline. When dissolved in warm water, Epsom salt is absorbed through the skin and replenishes the level of magnesium in the body. The magnesium helps to produce serotonin, a mood-elevating chemical within the brain that creates a feeling of calm and relaxation. Research shows that magnesium also increases energy and stamina by encouraging the production of ATP (adenosine triphosphate), the energy packets made in the cells. Experts believe that bathing with Epsom salt at least three times a week helps you to look better, feel better and gain more energy. Magnesium ions also relax and reduce irritability by lowering the effects of adrenaline. They lower blood pressure, create a relaxed feeling, improve sleep and concentration, and help muscles and nerves to function properly.

Relieves pain and muscle cramps

An Epsom salt bath is known to ease pain and relieve inflammation, making it beneficial in the treatment of sore muscles, bronchial asthma and migraine headaches. In addition, it has been known to heal cuts and reduce soreness from childbirth. Mix a thick paste of Epsom salt with hot water and apply to get soothing comfort. Try soaking your aching, tired (and smelly) feet in a tub of water with half a cup of our

Ultra Epsom Salt

. Epsom salt softens skin and will even neutralize foot odor.

Helps muscles and nerves function properly

Studies show that Epsom salt can help regulate electrolytes in your body, ensuring proper functioning of the muscles, nerves and enzymes. Magnesium is also known to be critical in the proper use of calcium, which serves as a main conductor of the electric impulses in your body.

Helps prevent hardening of arteries and blood clots

Epsom salt is believed to improve heart health and help prevent heart disease and strokes by improving blood circulation, lowering blood pressure, protecting the elasticity of arteries, preventing blood clots and reducing the risk of sudden heart attack deaths.

Makes insulin more effective

Proper magnesium and sulfate levels increase the effectiveness of insulin in the body, helping to lower the risk or severity of diabetes.

Relieves constipation

Numerous studies have revealed that Epsom salt can be used to treat constipation. Taken internally, Epson salt acts as a detoxifying agent for colon cleansing. The salt acts like a laxative by increasing water in the intestines and can bring about temporary relief from constipation. However, it is strictly warned that Epsom salts should not be used to relieve constipation without the consultation of a physician.

Eliminates toxins from the body

The sulfates in Epsom salt help flush toxins and heavy metals from the cells, easing muscle pain and helping the body to eliminate harmful substances. Your skin is a highly porous membrane and adding the right minerals to your bathwater triggers a process called reverse osmosis, which actually pulls salt out of your body, and harmful toxins along with it. For a detoxifying bath, at least once weekly add two cups of our

Ultra Epsom Salt

to the water in a bathtub and soak for 10 minutes.

Juice Ranch SB

Last Christmas I requested a juicer and Santa fulfilled my wishes. Since then, I have been going in and out of my juicing and I am happy to say that I am back on the juice program. With the help and motivation of a new juice bar in town, I am on my way into a healthy 2013. Couple Erin Gomez and Scott Walker have collaborated together to open Santa Barbara's first organically pressed juicery the Juice Ranch. I can't stop drinking their Almond Milk... from someone who drinks Whole Milk everyday, I just found a new love. The thing I love about juicing is that I just keep adding it to my diet, so I am not substituting or going on a cleanse, yet. I am just getting more vitamins per day by having a couple cups of fresh juice! Stoked on the Juice Ranch's creative recipes! Make sure to stop by their spot in the Funk Zone right across the street from Yoga Soup and say hello!
Juice Ranch Owners Scott Walker and Erin Gomez

Each bottle is $2 which is part of the recycle program at the Juice Ranch. So you can either return your bottles and receive $2 off your purchase or get charged the $2, juice is $10 with the bottle. There is something about the juice that tastes so yummy from the glass and I have also found that you can use these bottles for your own juicing and they work great.
Juice Ranch feature in The Independent
Owner Erin Gomez and juice specialist & nutritionalist Megan Santana
The great thing about the Juice Ranch is that they use a Cold Press to make their juice. I didn't know there was different ways to make juice before I got into it so I wanted to make sure you knew the difference.

Centrifugal Juicers Vs Cold Pressed Juicers

These appliances extract juice from fruit with an internal high-speed blade that spins against a metal strainer. The juice is separated from the flesh of the fruit by the centrifugal force generated by the blade and strainer separates the juice from the flesh of the fruit.

Cold-press juicers (sometimes referred to as masticating juicers) also produce juice from whole fruit. Instead of cutting fruit like centrifugal juicers, cold-press juicers chew or mash fruit to extract juice. Gears inside cold-press juicers compress fruits, vegetables and greens to squeeze out the juices. These juicers keep the juice intact, meaning naturally-occurring nutrients are retained in the extraction process.

Juice from a Cold-Press Appliance- Many health-conscious people prefer cold-press juicers to centrifugal juicers because they operate with lower heat. This lower heat setting keeps fruit enzymes intact. Since cold-press juicers mash fruit, they do not oxidize nutrients found in the fruit. They are believed to produce a more pure juice, as the finished product does not differ greatly from the juice inside the fruit.

I personally do not have a Cold Press Juicer, they range from $400+ but totally worth the investment in the end.

I personally think these two drinks are my favorites so far from the Juice Ranch, the Almond Joy and the Pink Panther.

Hope you can make it down there to try it out for yourself.

Energy Cleansing Sea Salt Elixir

Happy New Year! I hope everyone had a great evening and a yummy kiss:) 2013 is all about self love for me and one loving ritual that I have been practicing lately is taking hot cleansing baths. The hot water and healing concoctions that I make from natural ingredients have really been clearing my energy and restoring me back to a happier place so I wanted to share my mixture incase you too love baths or want to try a natural holistic approach to de-stressing your day or simply getting rid of old yucky energy that you may have absorbed throughout the day from others.

The first key ingredient is sea salt, I highly recommend Dead Sea Salt from the Dead Sea in Israel because it has higher concentrations of mineral elements. I purchased a bag of bulk salt from the San Francisco Salt Company and I was very satisfied with the quality of the salt.

The salt pictured above is course, I would recommend fine because it dissolves into the bath nicer but either one works great.

More about the Dead Sea Salt:

A luxuriant sea salt extracted and solar dried from the saline and mineral rich marshes of the confined Dead Sea.This salt is extremely wealthy in numerous key elements and has proven to be one of the best therapeutic salts available. The balance of the salts in Dead Sea water are magnesium, potassium, calcium chloride and bromides. Magnesium is important for both combating stress and fluid retention, slowing skin aging and calming the nervous system. Calcium is effective at preventing water retention, increasing circulation and strengthening bones and nails. Potassium energizes the body, helps to balance skin moisture and is a crucial mineral to replenish following intense exercise. Bromides act to ease muscle stiffness and relax muscles. Sodium is important for the lymphatic fluid balance (this in turn is important for immune system function). So we can see that bathing in high quality sea salt could replenish the minerals which are critical to our skin metabolism.

Once you have your base for the mixture, this is where it gets fun and you can get creative! I started with the the

Herbal Alchemist's Handbook: Grimoire of Philtres. Elixirs, Oils, Incense, and Formulas for Ritual Use by Karen Harrison

. I did a lot of research on the healing elements of natural herbs, aroma therapy and which aliments I wanted address and I found this book very helpful. The recipe I am giving you today is specifically for cleansing energy, addressing stress and tension and relaxation but feel free to get down on your own concoction and use this as a starting point!

After you have purchased your salt and gathered all your herbs, put the salt in a large bowl and just start mixing away with a large spoon. You can pretty much eye ball all the measurements when combining the herbs and just use your intuition and what you think feels right.

Here are the key ingredients that I used for my Energy Cleansing Elixir:

Lotus Leaves:

Promotes spiritual awakening, peace, and true dreaming. Attracts the Gods and aides with cleanings.

Rose Buds and Pedals:

Rose is linked to love and beauty in every culture. Love, affection, & seduction. The American Botanical Council reports that rose petals have sedative, antiseptic, antiparasitic, anti-inflammatory, laxative, cholesterol-lowering, and heart-supportive properties. Psychological studies indicate that rose oil can induce "sweeter dreams" and increase concentration and rate of work capacity.

Lavendar Oil:

Love, protection, peace and purification  Acne, allergies, amenorrhea, asthma, bruises, colds, cough, dandruff, depression, dermatitis, earache, eczema, flatulence, headache, hypertension, indigestion, infection, inflammations, insect bites and stings, laryngitis, migraine, nausea, nervous tension, neuralgia, psoriasis, rashes, rheumatism, scars, slow digestion, sore muscles, sprains, stress, sunburn, teething, toothache, ulcers, wound. Spike lavender can be added to any fragrance blend.

St. Johns-Warts Oil:

A cool, bitter herb, St. John's wort is sedative, anti-inflammatory, astringent, and most famously as an anti-depressant. Dispels negative energies.

Dry White Sage Leaves:

Blessing and energy cleansing. Some Native American tribes used white sage to treat coughs and colds, or added to a sweat bath as a general tonic and fever reliever. Burning leaves have been used to fumigate a house or dwelling after a contagion, and to purify the air during illnesses. White ceremonial sage also has been used as a hair rinse and a deodorant poultice to reduce body odor. It’s a very strong anti-inflammatory when taken as a tea or infusion, and may help reduce ulcerative symptoms.

Coconut Oil:

This is a great oil for general moisturizing and serves as a protective layer, helping to retain the moisture in your skin. It also acts as a mild oil suitable for those with inflamed and irritated skin, and those with skin sensitivities.

Baking Soda:

Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, provides a naturally alkaline substance with a reputation for helping to remove toxins.

If you are looking for place to purchase herbs or essential oils, I really like Mountain Rose Herbs online or

The Herbal Spirit in Santa Barbara if you are local.

Directions for use:

Scoop three tablespoons of the Energy Cleansing Elixir and Salt into a steaming hot bath. All components of the cleansing mixture will work to their full benefit with hot water as the heat draws the oils from the plants out. If you do not have a bath or would prefer to take a shower, scoop two tablespoons of the mixture into the cloth bag provided and run hot water through the pouch and scrub body, or use as exfoliator and put directly onto the skin.

The practice of taking detoxification baths is based on the idea of drawing toxins out through the skin during a bath by putting substances in the water that are thought to draw toxins out of the body. Proponents of detoxification recommend ridding the body of toxins taken in through our food and environmental pollution. Baking soda, or sodium bicarbonate, provides a naturally alkaline substance with a reputation for helping to remove toxins. -

Live Strong

I really like to use a mason jar to store my salt mixture. Hope this post has been helpful. Enjoy your self love.

xoxo
